Around The World Hamilton

#1 Post by stales » Mon Nov 19, 2012 11:35 am

It's been talked about for ages but Dan has finally prompted me into it..... Kicking off the Amazing, Around The World, Travelling Hamilton Hayden!

Here's the plan. With some help from Dan in the Maintenance Department, my Hayden has taken the first "public" leg of its around the world journey. It may be coming your way and, if it does turn up, then all you need to do is take a photo of it with you, preferably with some landmark in the background to prove its bona-fides. (May I suggest you resize the pics to 500 pixels wide to keep them standardised for this thread). After that send it to another person from this community - "who" is up to you, but the spirit of the exercise is for the watch to travel far and wide.

We know the ATW Hayden started life in PA in about 1949-50 and presumably there it stayed until it went to Perth Australia in 2010. In February 2012 it was transported by sea to Durban, South Africa via Singapore and from there by road through Zimbabwe into Zambia, arriving there on 28 May. Unfortunately there is no photographic record of these legs of the journey.

On 15 August it travelled by air back to Perth and then by air to PA to be ministered to by Dan. Who knows where it will turn up next and where its journey will end!

(For clarity's sake let's assume the watch remains my property until further notice)

Very cool! If it needs a tour of the Motown Museum... or perhaps the old Packard Plant, let me know. ;)

It's a great idea whose time has come. 8-)

When Rick gets it, maybe he can save the shipping charges and just pass it on to me over dinner or something.

Okay - so here's me and this freshly serviced Hayden looking for it's next home. First to PM me gets it next... assuming you include your address.

A bunch of fanatics is what we have here! Count me in if you need an Asian stop. Just make sure to talk to me first as the post can be dodgy in these parts.

I'll host it in Chicago if wanted. No, I won't get it near the lake. Haha.

Roger's Hayden has made its way to Waukesha, Wisconsin today. I changed its shoes on a whim and I like the results. If Roger likes it, I'll leave it on and it's his. Plus it may be a better fit on larger wrists (Mark ;)) Let me know if the strap needs to go on before I send it on its way in a day or two. I've got an interesting site for a photo op tomorrow. I've also stickied this thread so it stays towards the top of the Hamilton Forum.

That band actually looks quite sharp on the Hayden. I would not have thought to pair the two together.

And Max is a beautiful bird. I suspect he's seen quite a few watch restorations in his day!

I don't normally like metal bracelets...but it looks terrific. A photo with our pets looks like a nice travel watch opportunity also. ;)

Hayden has traveled approx. 800 miles from Dan in Collegeville, Pennsylvania to Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Mitchell Park Domes. Each dome is a different environment - desert, rainforest, and something else . I haven't been inside since we moved here in 1996. http://county.milwaukee.gov/TheDomes22802.htm

Milwaukee Art Muesum on Lake Michigan, designed by Santiago Calatrava. The Museum’s signature wings, the Burke Brise Soleil, form a moveable sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan. The brise soleil is made up of 72 steel fins, ranging in length from 26 to 105 feet. The entire structure weighs 90 tons. It takes 3.5 minutes for the wings to open or close. Sensors on the fins continually monitor wind speed and direction; whenever winds exceed 23 mph for more than 3 seconds, the wings close automatically.

I would have taken Hayden to Lambeau Field (home of the Green Bay Packers football team for you foreign forum members), but it's 4 hours round trip. Maybe some other time. Hayden will be on his way to our forum host Mark C. in California in a couple days.

This is Hamilton Avenue in Detroit. If I ever get the travel watch, it could get passed on with a bit of blood on the strap... perhaps I'll take the photo from my car for safety... it's not like there are likely any street signs to show anyway. LOL

It would be cool to find and post up a world map where you can mark where the watch has been and track how many miles it travels as it criss-crosses the globe.

EDIT - found this site and created an account: http://www.travbuddy.com/profile_edit.php
Can't figure out how to display the map though.

Great minds Tom.....

I was also wondering if there was some tracker kind of software out there. It can be done in Google Earth (Pro version I think) - but I also thought about something as simple as loading a hi res world map as a background on a document page, then manually plotting the destinations and linking arrows to show the sequence. Or numbering the destinations and inserting a legend detailing them. I'll have a bit of a look at it next week. In the meantime - all other contributions welcomed. I'd be happy to act as Trip Cartographer. (You know us geologists; we are never too far away from drawing our next map!)

Roger,
Take a look at mapme.com. I set up an account with hamilton as the login and password. It looks like it could be ideal based on my quick read at work. You can drop markers at locations worldwide and at each location attach photos and commentary.

Around The World Hamilton

#21 Post by Nookster » Thu Nov 29, 2012 10:07 am

Ok,

Rogers watch arrived safely in Southern California. Raining today so I will not be able to get any out door fun shots. So here are the first two shots, my office desk with that new Hamilton book I purchased on Ebay, Newport Beach, CA. My first and last wrist shot, I almost broke the band getting it over my hand. Will get some fun shots over the weekend.

Was a gloomy day, did my best with what I had to work with. Was fun going around Southern California, sorry for the not so great and sharp shots.

Start of the trip in Corona del Mar, California (between San Diego and Los Angeles). Picked up my buddy Mike from New Zealand and off we went.
