Hamilton Dial Interchangeability?

#1 Post by statsman » Mon Apr 12, 2021 11:25 am

How interchangeable are the dials on the round Hamilton watches of the 1950s and 60s? It seems that the defining parameters are dial diameter, dial feet spacing from center, dial feet length/diameter (to fit into movement spaces), and dial feet “clocking”. Are there others?

Is there some guide for dials for one movement also fitting other movements? Or does each movement have a unique dial that is not interchangeable with another movement?

Are you talking about the 8/0 Hamilton movements from the 1950's? I think by the 60's Hamilton started using Swiss movements. In general, dial feet locations are the same across movements of the same family.

Specifically, Swiss made 672 wristwatch movements. Do all dials from 672 watches “fit”? Or does the case diameters vary so that some dials are too big or small for other 672 watches? Do any dials from other (non-672) watches fit 672 movement watches?

The Hamilton 672 = Eta 1256. Dials made for this movement will interchange. Dials for this movement will vary slightly in diameter. Also, dials from eta 1256 relatives may interchange as well.

Thanks! I measured the diameter at 1 1/8” (28.6 mm), so any 672, or the noted eta movement, of the same diameter should work for me?

Yes. the last step is to try the dial swap and see if it works. Another thing to be aware of is that you will sometimes come across a situation where you have two of the same movement and they have different cannon pinion / hour wheel heights.. This has to do with the curve of the dial or to accommodate the hands being above tall hour markers.
