Need Help Matching Gruen Dial to Watch

#1 Post by statsman » Tue Jan 04, 2022 10:04 am

Hi! I recently bought this ‘55 Orange Bowl game dial on eBay and I’m trying to figure out the right watchcase and movement for it. I can’t find any pics of an intact watch on google. Sometimes the game program will have a pic of the award watch, but the only program I can find for sale is $200 (too high for me). My expectation is that the watch will be gold filled or gold plated.

The dial diameter is about 1.22”. The two prongs are on a 3/8” radius at about 5:10 and 10:20.

Does anybody have an idea about the right watch for this dial? Thanks.

I don’t have the movement (but for some reason, the hands came with it)

Is it a sample dial maybe?

I guess it could be, perhaps a sample produced by Gruen or a local Miami jeweler/bowl sponsor. I think I’d only pair it with a case if I knew it was “right” (if I could see an example of an intact ‘55 watch with this dial). (It helps a lot with your Hamilton bowl dials that for many years there are “Timely Topics” articles with pictures of the intact watch).

I can wait a while until I know for sure. I have also flirted with the idea of approaching a Nebraska Cornhusker collector about a trade.
