Re: Model 1629 Home Run
The 1930-31 catalog is available on this forum as the 1927-1931 catalog. These are actually the catalog pages from 1931. As for the 1929-1930 catalog, nothing is available online, but the Shawkey book has it almost in its entirety.

Re: Difference between Elgin Legionnaire 411 and 413 and E-301?
The cases were the same, as far as we know. In 1928, Elgin decided to change its model numbering system: 18/0 - 100's and 800's; 10/0 - 200's; 3/0 - 300's; 4/0 - 400's....etc. Under this system, the E-301 was renumbered into the 400 series, as the 300's were reserved for 3/0 sized movements. I suspe...

Re: Model 1629 Home Run
Elgin offered different bands with the same case. They gave a distinct model number to each band/attachment/strap variation. The Models 687 and 1629 were Model 680s with metal bands and 15 jewel movements. They were both priced at $37.50. The 687 was offered in the 1929-1930 catalog with a nickel ch...

Re: Would it be offensive if...
This is ever the debate among watch collectors. To me, do whatever gives greater value to you. If you think that it looks more stylish with a black dial, do it. If you want to show it as completely authentic, don't.

Re: introduction with new acquisition
Without more information, it would be hard to provide a backstory on the Elgin watch that you show. The bronzing of the crystal may be due to the aging of a plastic crystal. That is only speculation without seeing the watch. Elgin did not produce a Model 4 in 1924 - 1925. They were up in the 400 ser...

Re: Fred's Book Set Is Sailing Our Way!
Magpie is absolutely right. I also had the privilege of editing Fred's books. For material on wristwatches and wristwatch manufacturers in the 1920's and 1930's, there is no better book out there and I doubt there ever will be.
