50s Timex with period-correct friends

#1 Post by shadeone » Thu May 03, 2018 6:02 am

I like photographing things that "go together" so last night I was cleaning a couple of my typewriters and decided to gather some other period-correct things that would go with each one. Here is "early 50s" and "late 50s" shots featuring some things that would have probably been on the table next to the machines back in the day...

Image

"Early 50s":
1955 Timex Marlin
1954 Coca-Cola bottle
Early 50s Papermate Deluxe pen
1950 Smith Corona Silent typewriter

"Late 50s":
1958 Timex Viscount
1959 Orange Crush bottle
Mid-late 50s Papermate Tu-Tone pen
1959 Olympia SM-3 typewriter

Hello shadeone,

a super idea - I really like this! That’s my approach too: composing stills with period matching items.

As you seem to be a collector of typewriters: well, I own one vintage typewriter, what’s a “Fortuna” made by the German company Sauer & Sohn in the late 20s/early 30s. Well, in my “other life” I’m a collector of pistols made by Sauer & Sohn, Suhl. And I have a Sauer model 1913 marked with “RFV”, what’s in short the German Customs Authority. Guess what? My “Fortuna” typewrite also has a property marking of the RFV (R. Fin. Verw) …

OK, no watch here, so a little bit off topic – next time I’ll take a photo of my typewriter together with a watch matching the period of the typewriter.

In any case: really a brilliant idea to pair period relating items with a watch. Never thought about pairing a typewriter with a watch - but it's a great idea.

Best regards

Martin

That picture is AWESOME!!! I dont have any firearms pre-1983 or so but I am trying for one of the CMP surplus 1911s. I have a WWII Coca-Cola bottle and access to an olive-drab us army typewriter for the potential picture should I happen to get the 1911;)

nice pics of the US Time watches. Now you just have to find period correct bands \ straps.

Thanks! As you don’t have a 1911 to be photographed with the olive-drab US Army typewriter: a captured Luger would also fit! ;)

No, seriously; why don’t you pair it with a WWII wrist watch?

Here is another resource showing the band selection of the era.
Note the stitched leather bands with a single hold down.

The chrome and leather combo is... interesting haha. I'll stick with stitched leather ;)
