Timex Black Max And Hooded Lugs

#1 Post by kma2018 » Sat Aug 04, 2018 4:47 pm

One of my favorite Timex mechanical watches is the Timex Black Max. I've been trying to give my Black Max some more wrist time by switching out the band, but the hooded lugs make it a little challenging as some straps (NATOs for instance) just don't look right. I usually have it on the rubber/resin strap below, but recently found a black leather band with white stitching that seems to work. Does anyone with a Black Max or other black case, hooded lug watches have any other suggestions? Thanks.

While we're on the subject, here are two YouTube videos featuring the Timex Black Max. I'm surprised that I could only come up with two videos about this watch, which I think was one of Timex's best looking designs.

The second video link to the original Timex commercial was uploaded months ago by another forum member (thanks, JerseyMo!) and always fun to watch (advertising standards sure have evolved). What's also interesting is that if you pause the video at the 0:22 second mark, it almost looks like the watch has an integrated bracelet. But the one held up by the spokesmodel at about the 0:10 second mark looks like the standard hooded lug Black Max.

I suggest a black metal band such as the one used on the "Coke Bezel" Sport Series Diver of 1980. What is important is that the end be flat and have a tapered styling to complement the curve of the case.

Here are a few examples. -

Great suggestion and awesome collection pics, JerseyMo. I'll start shopping for a tapering black metal band. I'm hoping that the lug width isn't the hard to find 17mm like so many of my vintage Timex watches. The leather band I put on is 18mm, but as I recall needed a bit of compression to fit.

Timex sizes were 11/16 and 3/4 inch mostly so the use of metric sized bands will present issues at times. By going with a metal band you have the option to file and or grind the end caps down to better fit.
