Dear Dad,

Today we hit the streets again and visited the clocks at Flinders Street station, one of the old universal meeting points for all Melbournians.

Image

Those elgin watches you all warned me about dared me to do something called a photo bomb... Couldn't see the harm in it so went ahead and did it.

Image

I don't think anyone saw me...

Merritt

I am very impressed that the station clock's hands have been set to 10:10 for the shot. (So maybe it's 13:50 but whatever - still impressed).

Dear Dad,

Yesterday was typical Melbourne drizzle so we didn't get out.

Today we stopped by the Manchester Unity Building. This building was built at the height of the great depression in the 1930s, it was built in record time and was the first building in Melbourne to have an escalator.

I heard those Elgins talking the other night, there up to something...

I somehow feel we are modelled in the same design.

Where is the around the world Hamilton, anyway? We didn't send it to Ash again, I hope.

The Hayden went AWOL with Ash over a year ago in the UK -- I think it was Roger who kindly replaced it with a nice Merritt. If Diveboy can get (the) Merritt to me in the next 10-14 days, "he" could make a grand entrance at the Detroit Auto Show. ;) (Though since it's in Australia now, perhaps there are a lot of other better sights for Merritt to see first! Plus, I am sure "he" likes summer with Diveboy much more than winter! )

Young Merritt has arrived for a winter vacation in Detroit. Unfortunately he has not seen many sights and sounds...yet.

Good stuff Rick. My hand is up to reeceive him back when you are done showing him around..... I'm about to commence a business development role based in Dubai with responsibility for Europe, Africa, the Middle East plus Russia and the Stans. Tons of travel, tons of photo ops for the little guy.

LOL, I have been waiting for a proper snowstorm to take him skiing, but this winter that seems impossible. We could visit 8 Mile... but I then might need to use my CPL to get him home safe. ;)

Well now that Hayden is gone and in the absence of young Merritt, it's up to my latter day Ventura to be pressed into service.....

Here we are earlier today in front of the Burj Al Arab, the 3rd tallest hotel in the world and about 10 minutes down the road from my new abode in Dubai.

I'd love to see a few pics of your new digs. The place is Africa was pretty swanky by any standard.

Dave you should know better than to encourage me....

We arrived in Dubai one month ago today. Never been there before but now it's home. Went into temporary accommodation in the Marina District, only a few blocks from the office. Our first ever taste of "downtown" living. I must say it was a contrast to the suburbs of Zambia....

Image
Marina District by night. We are staying in the building on the LHS of the bridge, the one with the vertical white swoosh.

On the second night we hosted a mate of mine from Australia who was passing through Dubai and knows the place well. He suggested we go to the Rivington Restaurant at the Dubai Mall because it had a great view of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. Actually, at 829.2m (2,720') it is the world's tallest artificial anything. It's difficult to get into a single frame.

Image

And if that wasn't impressive enough, each night it shows off.... Here it is one of its MANY show pony moments:
Image

Dave, you asked to see a pic of the new digs. Well, we've signed up for a place at the head of the Marina; to the centre top right of the night time shot above. We move in on Wednesday and you can bet that after a day of unpacking we will be enjoying a GnT on the balcony checking out the view:
