Hamilton-Ricoh

#1 Post by Namespetra » Mon Dec 11, 2017 4:09 pm

I recently acquired this fine example of an early 1960s Hamilton-Ricoh electric watch. I’d like to share it here for the purpose of collecting in one place photos and information about Hamilton-Ricoh watches. An earlier VWF thread offered some good background history on the brief American Hamilton and Japanese Ricoh partnership: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4183&p=49749&hilit=Ricoh#p49749

Does anyone else have an Hamilton-Ricoh watch that they’d like to share here? My example has what appears to be a yellow gold electroplated bezel (approximately 36mm diameter) with a stainless steel back (E1001 model number?). The 555E electric movement runs great with a 394/380 battery. The lug width is 3/4” or 19mm. I don’t know if the few watch models made under the Hamilton-Ricoh partnership were given names or were identified by product numbers. A catalog for these watches has not yet surfaced.

Take note of the small words imprinted on the dial beneath the 6 o’clock marker. They appear to be “OP-E5” and may indicate a dial style. Any ideas on what they might signify?

I’m eager to see other collector’s models and learn more about these uncommon watches.

The only original ad I've ever found. Unfortunately it turned up after I had published the last edition of my book.

I minored in Japanese in college, but that was decades ago and I have sadly forgotten most of it. What I can read in this is interesting -- it plays up the Ricoh name in large characters, and downplays Hamilton. Just below the picture of the watch it has "Hamilton" in small katakana characters, followed by "Ricoh" nearly twice as large. The Ricoh name appears several times throughout the text but that is the only place that Hamilton appears. They knew their local market.

LOL, Rene who knew you spoke Japanese? I've known you for over 20 years, not a peep.

I used to speak Japanese.... Not particularly fluently, but well enough to maintain a conversation. But like any language, if you don't use it regularly you forget it.

I have a total of five Hamilton Ricoh Electrics in 3 different styles. None are quite the same as yours but the ones labelled "E1001" have a similar Converta/Railroad style case but without the fancy bezel, just a very plain one. The "E1002" is like a bigger Sealectric II and the "E1003" has a very faintly squared off round case. If you look very closely it has four corners. Here's a quick shot- when I get some time I will get some better pictures.

Thanks for the contributions so far. I’m immediately struck by the relative uniformity of the various models’ dial and case designs.
