Steeldon with unusual dial/ hands

#1 Post by -G-G- » Thu Nov 02, 2017 6:10 am

Recently got this steeldon with a handsome but unusual dial and blued hands.

I've never seen anything in the catalogs, or any other photos showing a Steeldon with anything but the luminous numbers dial or the rhodium plated gold applied number dial, but then this one shows up...

No tell tale notch at 3 but I haven't then it apart to see the back of the dial yet.

What think you? Redial, swapped from another model? Or is it an unusual original?

Anyone seen one like this before?

It's hard to say for sure. It looks like it's old and the hands are the correct style for a Steeldon. Never say never, I suppose. The crystal can make the dial printing look funny and some printing looks a little more wavy than I would expect but it's probably the glass. I'm not sure why the second hand arrow would have a white tip though. Could have started out luminous and then been reprinted to a black pattern later.

Here is a pic of it, you can see it was offered both ways.

Not with a black numeral dial option, it wasn't. Just rhodium applied numerals and the luminous pattern.

Dan,

Interesting find! The back of the dial may indicate if it has been refinished. It is not beyond the realm of possibility it was something that came out of the R & D department. Let us know what you see on the back of the dial?

The font is not one I recognize as being used by Hamilton. If these little gems could talk.

I took the watch apart today, and the back of the dial looks all orginal to me.
