Hamilton Boxes

#1 Post by retroworx » Fri Feb 14, 2014 1:23 pm

I am thinking that gorgeously restored Rene Rondeau watches should not live in the cramped quarters of a watch case with the other riff-raff, but need a penthouse of their own.

Are either of these style boxes not correct for a 505 Meteor?

The second box would be suitable for a 500A Meteor but not a 505. The box at the top came out in autumn 1965, too late for a Meteor.

For a 505 Meteor you'd need either of these two. The first 505s used the 500A box with a small 505 sticker. That was soon replaced with a newly-designed box with 505 printed on the silk lining.

Thanks, Rene. I will continue the search.

If anyone here has a Meteor-appropriate box for sale, please PM.

And so to test my knowledge, this listing of a 505 box is incorrect, then? It has the 505 literature but not a correct 505 box, yes?

Definitely a mismatch of box and papers. The guarantee folder is sized to fit inside the larger square cardboard box that went with the box shown in my picture. It was not used with that earlier clamshell box, it would have had to be folded to get into the outer box.

I am blown away by the price! It's up to $152.

And now, a bunch more boxes just rolled out on eBay.

I think that every rushed to their sock drawer and pulled out their electric boxes once they saw that an empty box can get over $400.

By the way... quick side note: I bought a bunch of boxes on eBay a few years ago and the satin liner on one of them was coming loose. So, I pulled up the watch platform to re-glue it and under the platform I found a 1934 $50 bill that someone had hidden under there.

So now I always check under he liners and platform when I get an old box!

Stumbled upon this while trolling the Bay yesterday (sold watch listing complete with box) and thought I would post it for confirmation/reference of correct box, outerbox, papers, etc:
