Case number 940678 mystery Automatic

#1 Post by Namespetra » Mon May 22, 2017 6:36 pm

Can anyone identify this model? It has a 10k yellow gold filled B&A case with the number 940678 imprinted on the inside case back. The case, dial and movement are signed Hamilton. The 689A movement's rotor looks as if something was routered off beneath the Hamilton name. Perhaps this was done at the factory to remove the name of another watch company? I've not seen this on a Hamilton movement before. Any idea what happened here?

I really like the original dial - four of the Roman numerals are applied gold and the others are printed on the dial.

The personal dedication on the case back looks like it was factory engraved, but the 1979 date is certainly at the far end of Hamilton's Lancaster production. Maybe it was a watch issued through the award division in the mid 1970s and never catalogued?

that's unusual indeed. I looked up pictures of the Hamilton 689 and it didn't have any other ID marks on the rotor except for those already found in your picture. The base caliber for the 689 is an ETA but ETA marks are found only beneath the balance wheel and then only the tiny ETA logo.

Maybe an internal mark from the company? And then they changed their mind and they had it brushed off or covered?

Anyway, great watch. The applied gold markers are lovely.
