Recommended books?

#1 Post by pmac » Fri Dec 02, 2016 3:34 am

Hello! Please excuse this questions if it's been asked a thousand times, but as a new collector interested in pre-1950 art deco vintage wristwatches, I was wondering if there are any books out there that someone could recommend to me? I am interested in model and brand histories and styles in particular. Can someone point me in a useful direction?

Thanks!

Well, there's lots of info around on the internet already (Depends on which brands you are interested in) ... have you tried running a search for "art deco watches" ??

I'd start right in this site ... there are plenty of catalog, ad, and other scans posted here (especially for Hamilton). Lots of info on the American watch companies themselves as well.

Of course, if you are interested in Swiss/European or Japanese production, you'll have to look elsewhere online ... but there is info around.

It would help if you tell us if you are primarily interested in getting info (pics, specs, current value, ...) of specific models [wrist-watches only, or do you also like the pocket-watch models as well??] ... or if you want company/brand history and other such info in addition (or instead).

I'm partial to art deco models myself.

The catalogs here are great resources. I would look at the the Hamilton catalogs by year.

Additionally, Elgin has MANY art deco models. In my opinion, I find that Elgin had a greater breadth of art deco models than Hamilton, but it seems that the documentation is scarce.

Theres a good catalog on the site here for Elgins here:

Also, there's a member here that has a great website, www.artdecowristwatches.com. There's an archive of prior watches sold that's great for reference.

For Illinois, "The Illinois Watch".

I'm speaking to the American brands, but that's my preference.

There are some specialty sites for different brands that did make art deco styles. Here are a few more for the American brands:
