Waltham cushion in the movies.

#1 Post by Dave » Sat May 17, 2014 9:09 am

I was watching My Love Came Back (1940) on TCM. Right near the beginning of the movie, this watch got a prominent shot so I paused the movie to identify and take a photo. It looks like it says Waltham. The second shot shows the guy who is supposed to be wearing the watch, check out the strap.

I get a kick out of glimpsing vintage watches in vintages films, too. Lately, I've enjoyed identifying vintage watches on AMC's series, "MADMEN."

That sure is a weird watch strap on that Waltham Cushion. It looks too narrow for the lug width, and appears to be clamped to the wrist by means of some tension mechanism. I've seen contemporary ladies wrist watches with similar straps in metal, but never on a gents model.

I'm sure I've seen a similar strap in the past.

Maybe Scott can enlighten us as to the maker/s?

I think that this style might to referred to as the "cuff band", here are a few pictures of one that I have.

Probably from the late 20's or early 30's, best guess.

When all of the watches that I buy come in I remove the bands and toss them in a big box, never know when you might need a odd sized buckle of something.

I can't find a maker's mark on the band anywhere.

It does have a US Patent number but a few of the digits have been worn away.

Watched "Hail, Caesar" over the weekend - pretty entertaining if you like the Cohen Brother movies

several screen shots of Josh Brolin's wrist, mostly showing this Waltham - others (not as up close) show a different watch

don't know the model, pretty nice looking watch

I think that shape is referred to as a "Maxine," for reasons unknown to me. And another bit of trivia about it, I'm pretty sure that watch has been in two Cohen brothers movies. I think John Turturro wore it in "Barton Fink."
Real men wear small watches.
