Will any 16s movement fit into the same case?

#1 Post by EarlGreybeard » Sat Dec 02, 2017 12:43 pm

Hi. I managed to drop my 1918 silver Waltham, and it has stopped running. I am beginning to think it might be more economical to swap in a working movement rather than pay out for a repair. So, I was wondering whether I could buy any 16s Waltham movement as the replacement?

My existing Dennison open face case contains a 15j No. 620 movement (serial 21786127). I can see for example a 1925 P.S. Bartlett 16s movement for sale (serial 25180312). Are they swappable do you know? Sorry if this is very naive.

Many thanks,

Ray

Around the 1890s most American companies standardized most of their movement sizes so that they could be easily installed in standard cases. Prior to this they often took special cases - slightly larger or thicker - but by 1900 a 16-size movement from almost any company would fit a standard 16-size case. Any Waltham 1899 or 1908 model will fit a standard 16-size case (except for most of the Waltham-Equity models, which were a little larger).

Thanks Jerry. You are a star. That is just what I needed to know. At least I now have the option of upgrading the movement.

Many thanks,

Ray
