Breguet balance for Thos Russell?

#1 Post by Barryw1957 » Thu Aug 10, 2017 7:47 am

Hi all,
I have a Thos Russell half hunter pocket watch that is need of repair. I have been informed by a specialist antique pocket watch repairer that it needs a replacement Breguet balance, which I am led to believe is very scarce....he doesn't have one! The watch movement is 36mm dia slim movement and has a personal inscription with the date of 1923. If anyone is able to help or offer advise I would very much appreciate it. From what I have been told, the existing movement shows a previous attempt to clean it with oil and the balance is now stuck even after being soaked in solution to free it. I assume that the experts among you will recognise the folly in using non-specialist oil and will also know of the solution used, to attempt the clean.
This is a family heirloom so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Barry

Can you show us a picture of the watch mechanism ("the movement")? It is rare that an entire balance wheel assembly needs to be replaced on a pocket watch unless it has really seen some abuse.

Many thanks for the speedy reply (JerryT), I really appreciate it. If I have done this correctly, you should be able to see the movement from the following link. All I can tell you is that when the spring was removed it was soaked in a solution or 10 minutes but I was told that it was still "stuck together" and couldn't be freed. The whole movement was also "full of oil" to coin his phrase. I was told that the only chance I had was if someone had a movement from the same type of watch, from the same date range (early 1920's) ...the chances of which are very slim.

I still hope someone can help :)

Thanks again,

I have been told that the link to photobucket doesn't open the images so please try this one.

From your photo the watch does not look that gummy and it is hard to believe that the entire balance wheel needs to be replaced. I might try consulting a different watchmaker.

Thanks for that JerryT. I live in the North West (Bolton), is there anyone you can suggest that may be able to help me? I do mean with the watch by the way...I am beyond help for living in Bolton

Since I live in the States I am afraid I cannot help you on qualified watchmakers near you. I am glad to see, though, that you have connected with some more knowledgable NAWCC members who do live in England.
