Gruen "Batwing" Crystal?

#1 Post by retroworx » Tue Aug 02, 2016 12:46 pm

I am looking for crystal numbers (or crystals!) for the following two Gruens:

One is the Ristside Fraternity, and the other is seems to be a "square cut corner" version of the Park Avenue.

Thanks!

Hi retroworx,

It would be easier to identify your needed crystals if you would post the style numbers which should be stamped inside the back. The sales names have often been used several times during the Gruen area, the style / caliber combination will be unique to a crystal.

The "Park Avenue" reminding watch should be style 691, caliber 415, I have one of these as well. The crystal from SUC is the RA112, it is said to be the same as for the Bulova Liberty.

Barney, I am embarrassed to say that I did not even realize the style numbers were stamped there.

Thanks for the tip and the style identification!

I recommend Murphy's Crystals in Ceres California for crystal replacement. You send them your case and they will install the correct crystal, either glass or plastic. I no longer do any of my own crystal work... they do it all for me as their prices are cheap and it's a one-stop kind of thing.

Barney is correct that you want to use the Style Numbers in the case back when looking for crystals. If you send the caliber - style number info along with the bezel to Murphy's, they will be able to look up the correct crystals.

Could the Ristside watch be a Ristside Falcon? You'll find it on page 107 of the Gruen Watch Model Identification Guide Volume 2. The Fraternity is also shown on page 114. That entry says the Fraternity has a gold filled expansion bracelet. The Falcon and Fraternity look almost identical except for the dial shown and the expansion band.

They'll look great with new crystals!

Hi Mike:

Thanks for all the great information! My dial is black and has applied gold numerals at each of the 12 positions, no markers. Is that version of the dial specific only to the Fraternity, or did the Falcon have that dial variation as well?

I'll post this little bit of heaven once it is assembled with the crystal that is on its way. :)
