Curvex 440 stats....

#1 Post by MikeTheWatchGuy » Wed Dec 27, 2017 4:29 pm

The Caliber 440 movements Serial Numbers seem to be the most straight-forward of all of the Gruen movements. I've been chipping away at decoded for a few months. The initial findings were published quite a while back. I've continued to add some data to the graph and nothing really shocking has turned up since the initial post.

The trend is obvious.

I recently stumbled onto a watch that in a single data point that speaks volumes. For me it puts a tidy bow on the lifetime of the 440.

The serial number on the movement look like "9493". It's a 'C' series.
The Wadsworth Serial Number is an L3 series indicating approx 1953.

It was really surprising the see a 440 498 stamped case made SO late in the 440 movement's history.

The take-away for me was that Gruen produced exactly 40,000 Curvex Caliber Caliber 440 movements. The serial numbers went 0 to 9999 with a prefix of Blank, A, B, C.

That is a too cool of a find.

The only thing that would be cooler... D 0001.

How do you think these two pairs fit into the scheme?
G826748 B2308
G850091 B0759
They are from two of my watches.

Found two more in my watch pool:
G326745 8368
G877473 B0494

Plus serial 0991, but in a non Gruen / Wadsworth case...
There is one thing special with three of those four Curvex movements, how can guess what that might me?

Does that one have a little 's' on the case back? Just curious....

Hi Jack,

this is data set from my pink gold Curvex Trooper. And yes it is a sterling silver case, back in 1943 a lot of watch cases or at least the backs were made from silver with gold plating.

But what I would like you (the forum members) to find out, is what makes the other three special. They have at least one thing in common which I believe all other watches in Mikes statistics do not have.
Don't know why I wrote "how" instead of "who", but I think you got my question...

Perhaps the text is 180 degrees on one of them from the others.

Nope.

Here comes the first clue: size matters...
