Quick ligne to mm / mm to ligne conversions....

#1 Post by MikeTheWatchGuy » Sat Jul 08, 2017 4:17 pm

Lots of new tools being added to GruenWristwatches. More focus on building out the Movement Catalog has meant living in the world of Lignes and MM and having to move back and forth. Tiring of using a calculator or lookup table, I coded up an online one and stuck it on my homepage and on the Movement Catalog page. It'll come in handy later as that catalog and the tables are built out just a little bit more.

It's not Gruen specific of course.

Entering "16" into the box could mean EITHER 16 mm or 16 lignes.
You don't even have to choose... you'll get both lignes and mm... two for the price of one... so enjoy!

The same tool can be found on the [urlhttp://www.gruenwristwatches.com/movement-catalog.php]Movement Catalog [/url]page, below the new Movement Information Finder (MIF) tool area. Don't get miffed at not finding the movement in the index of your parts catalog, use the online Gruen MIF to locate the correct page in all of your parts catalogs. :D

Cool tool. I don't need to convert often, but now and then. Speaking of living in a world of lignes, one of the things that surprised me the first time I saw the 1926 parts catalog is that even the straps were listed in lignes.
Real men wear small watches.

It's a handy feature you put in there ...

but one slight problem that I see:

According to formula,
1 ligne = 2.2558 mm

so, the measurement in lignes should be smaller numerically than it's corresponding mm measurement/value. The way you have it there is backwards compared to how I learned it ;)

Thus:
In the example you showed, it should say

16 lignes = 36.0932656 mm
16 mm = 7.09273584 lignes

Ninja is absolutely correct, I should have paid more attention. Just didn't because I did not need the tool yet...

Thanks very much for pointing it out.... Need to swap the labels and that'll fix it.
