Gruen Longacre Quadron 14K

One of the many treasures I picked up at the NAWCC National last week was a Gruen Longacre in solid 14K white gold.

The Longacre was part of Gruen's Quadron series and was priced at $100 in 1931. It also appears in the 1934 Gruen catalog.

A few things I've heard and read suggest it was introduced to recognize the marriage of Fred Gruen's daughter Margaret to Jacob J. Longacre. But it seems the pair didn't marry until 1939, so perhaps that part of the story may be apocryphal.

Longacre was a prominent Cincinnati physician, but when the watch was introduced in 1931 he was just a 24-year-old medical student at Harvard. Perhaps he was already dating Gruen's daughter and she had some influence on the name ("Daddy, would you please, please, please name one of your fancy watches after my dear Jake?"). Or perhaps Fred Gruen was acquainted with Jacob's father and named it for him.

It is a fairly large watch with a heavy case compared to some other watches of the era.

The Longacre is powered by a 21-jewel grade 3251 Quadron movement, which I believe was Gruen's first 21-jewel wristwatch movement.
