1926 ladies Gruen

#1 Post by inatime » Sun Jun 10, 2018 11:10 am

Would anyone happen to have a catalog or advertisement clip of this ladies Gruen they would share with me? From the movement serial number, grade and style number it appears to be around 1926. This is another of the timepieces I picked up last week at a local live auction.

BTW, if someone has a better dial I'd be interested in it.

Many thanks,
Patrick

Patrick,

I think that this December 1927 ad shows your watch:

The case serial is also more towards 1927, but could be 1926, I do not have that many datapoints to be date it by the serial precisely. I tend 80 / 20 towards 1927.
You did not show the movement or told us about the serial. Is it a caliber 153 like stamped in the case? Then I would expect a serial number between 300000 and 330000 for a 1927 built movement.

Funny, but I did not see the watch in the 1927 Stock Record Book and not in the Catalog. Did I simpy overrlook it or is it really not in there?

Ah, I see, you now added the movement picture or did it not show up for me? Serial seems to be 303k, so I expect this watch being early 1927.

Thanks for sharing Barney! Not sure why the movement picture didn't show up for you; I had posted all 3 at the same time.

Just put a beautiful period expansion bracelet on it and one on an Elgin for my wife. I have 2 ladies Hamilton where the fixed lugs are wider so need to find a couple more or make up a couple of grossgrain ribbon straps with some period clasps.

HI Patrick,

strange that the photo did not show up, I accessed your post about three times (but later it might have come from the cache...). Just when I added my post, the third picture showed up.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I have one more ad from 1927 showing the watch, which was published in February already. Nothing from 1926 and I did not check for later ones.

A grossgrain ribbon strap with nice period clasps would of cause be a perfect fit, but you might also look out for a filigree metal strap. Both should look authentic, other than this expandable strap from probably the 50s or 60s.

You mentioned, that the movement serial number would fit your 1926 estimate, do you have a table for the serials to look up?

My favorite bracelet for this style of watch is this type, manufactured by Bugby & Niles, one of the main bracelet suppliers to Gruen in this era:

It's for sale on eBay. Very likely came off a Gruen just like yours and looks to be pretty long:

Thanks both. The eBay bracelet is gone already! Put a WGF filagree on it, looks great! Could use couple sets of clasps for a couple 12 mm fixed lug Hamiltons of my wife's now.

I was on gruenwristwatches site thats where I got the approximate 1926 date.

Sorry, should have PM'd it to you. ;) It had been there for a while until I posted that link.
