#1 Post by Pasty Duchy » Sun Nov 26, 2017 3:19 pm

Hi, new to the forum, I'm looking for a bit of info on this please, production date and model ID would be great. I figured 1950s but any it's a small dial big claw lugs combo that I'm not familiar with.
Thanks in advance for your interest
Cheers

Hi,

and welcome to this forum in the world of Gruens.
Very nice 50s watch which you are showing us there. The 21 symbol tells us that it's movement is one of the US built 21 jewel caliber 335 which Gruen manufactured in their facility in Norwood for tax reasons. Importing 21 jewel movement was incorporating high import duties so Gruen decided to manufacture their own movements starting with higher jewel count. It has a center second so it is a caliber 335SS also called 3351SS to indicate the 21 jewels.

According to "The Catalog", the almost complete Gruen model library, remastered and published by Mike Barnett this is "Strap 795" which came in a yellow gold filled case only. Looking through early 50s ads we find this model being advertised as the "Gruen Majesty, 21 Jewels! Sweep second hand. Shock resistant. Anti-magnetic. Gold filled" sold for $71.50 back in 1953. The Gruen marketing named it the "leader in the field of good looks and 21 jewel accuracy". There is also a picture of the watch in Mikes 1950s book at page 178. All the ads I own are dated from May 1953 to December 1953, so I think this model was not built over a long time, may be only a single shot production of a few thousand. Originally it came with a metal strap.

There was also a "Curvex Majesty" at that time which should not be mixed up with this watch.

Thank you Barney for the very thorough reply. Please feel free to post a pic of the advert, it'd be great to see what style of strap was with it at the beginning.
