1951 Bulova Berkshire

#1 Post by Mugea » Sat Jan 21, 2017 8:19 am

After my wife presented to me a Bulova Clipper for Christmas, I began to have an eye on Bulovas. Well, I will not become a Bulova collector, but there are some Bulovas with an unusual design.

The most unusual (for my opinion) is the Berkshire. Can’t explain the reason why, but I had to have one. Mine is of 1951. Not in perfect condition and I should have taken more care in polishing it (what’s not that easy – the silver bezel ring with the numerals and markers is riveted to the case) – but what the heck.

Interestingly, Hamilton brought out in 1953 also a model named Berkshire – also a watch of its time, but at least a little more restrained.

Maybe, the Bulova Berkshire is “the Continuation of the Piping Rock by Other Means”.

Best regards

Martin, I too never intend to become a "Bulova" collector, now having over 600, so far. :o

I don't know where I went wrong!!!

PS, I have your watch in the black dialed version named "Air King". Bottom row.

Hi watchdog,

wow! Over 600 Bulovas…. And what’s your favourite Bulova?

Thanks for showing the Air King. Yes, with the black dial it looks even better.

Regards

Martin
P.S: Do you have a Bershire dial laying around?

I've had a few Airkings over the years — it's an incredible design, but indeed one of the most difficult cases I have ever had to clean up.

OK, Just got this one in and in serious need of restoration. I give you the 1928 Bulova "Windsor".

Now that is generous!! I’m speechless! Thanks! I’ll send you my address via PM.

Seriously: I’m curious to see the before and after photos. Nice looking watch – also in the “before” condition.

The pic of the "Windsor" is the before shot, sometimes, just because of sheer volume, a lot of my watches will wait for months to years before full restoration, depending on what's needed. Some may never receive restoration (at least in my lifetime) and are just being saved as a "example" of a watch that rarely comes to light.

This 1951 "Marlborough" came my way as running and in pretty nice condition and will be the next one off for a COA, period correct strap etc.
