Black dial Elgin Niagara

#1 Post by grumpyguy » Tue Mar 29, 2016 5:00 pm

By now, you know I love the design of this dial and how I whined when another example of the black dial Niagara went for somewhere north of $350 recently.

I finally got one at a decent price. The dial is pristine and the case is probably in A- shape, with the satin finish still intact on the case back-something I've never seen before.

Case # is 6821 and uses the Swiss 17 jewel 643.

Here's my other Niagara variant with a white dial. Note that Elgin apparently uses two different style bezels with the same case number.

Both of those Niagara dials are beautiful -- and the black one is fantastic! (So nice that the case is in such fine shape too.)

Agreed!

Both are in fantastic condition.

I never could lay off of the black dials!

It took a while but I joined the niagara club.
One popped up with a reasonable buy it now in now working order.
Got it fixed up and running good.
I'll try to get a good pic soon. Its already dark out.

Congrats! That still is one of my favorite dials. The guillochesque oil press dial looks as good as some modern Swiss examples. Of the white or black, the black is the best.

It might have been a low ender for Elgin, but it definitely looks high end to me.

The case is all stainless. To me that is key on some of these.
They have a great feel and will last a couple more lifetimes.
I have a pretty active life. I'm always working on something, because of that I often wear the stainless ones because I have less fear of dinging them up.
When going someplace nice or I don't have work to do I'll pick something gold and flashy with a nice strap.
The best part is we have so many options. Lol

My second hand has evidence that it was once red. I see yours is not. Any idea if they did at one time come with red?
I can clean this one up or repaint it. I just want it to pass the wrist test first.
