Here's another small complication I'd like to add to the discussion. Elgin cooked up an additional branding for their Self Winding models. This is a 6853 which ordinarily I would call a Thin Thin "27" A.

This 1962 ad however seems to show the gold toned dial version as the American Made Self-Winding "A". This might have been done to create a connection to the American Maiden Lady's models or maybe I'm hallucinating after staring at old ads for so long.

Anyone with both a 6853 and a 9815 want to take a couple quick measurements and see if they really are the same case? I'm pretty sure they are damned near identical.

Can you link an image or describe in detail so we all get it right the measurements ? This was next on my agenda.
Something like

1. Lug end to end
2. Lug internal width
3. Case back diameter (if it has one)
4. Case diameter

I have one that's a 3 piece case, haven't seen anyone else with one yet, its got the ring that secures the case back.

I've started recording the case makers, case metals and case stampings.

I have 3 6853's and a couple 9815's.

There are identical in size and use the same spacer rings to secure the movement in the case.

The difference, WELL SORT OF. The 9815's have a brushed finish on the side of the case, which runs onto the lugs.

Two of my 6853's, including a NOS 6853, have polished sides and lugs, with brushing only between the lugs.

BUT, I have one 6853 that has brushing all the way around like the 9815. Could be that someone put the caseback of a 6853 on a 9815 case.

Part of me wishes I would have splurged.
I snagged a face pic of one of these off Ebay. It had the inner caseback which, to my shame, I didn't snag. I have it as "24027", but I think it was supposed to be "2402Y".

it has been updated with lots of changes, we have a good grasp on the 27 jewels but the 30 jewels are still a wild card.
