Great idea, Rob! I have some I've been meaning to scan, plus that binder of sales flyers for jewelers from the 50s on how to sell 'the ELGIN line'.

Gotta wait for a dry day, though. Don't want to get 60 year old ads wet, taking them to work!

Doug,

I am going to have a look through some old magazines and see what else I might have. I thought this might be a good way to start a resource that could someday be put in the form of a model listing, akin to what Dave did with the Hamiltons. We will see what response and resources there are out there..........

This is the first post in the Elgin forum which Rob posted on Feb of 2012. I asked Mark to make it a sticky bring it back to the front of the forum so the community can contribute their ads to the research on Elgin watches. Here are clips of the magazine ads I have found over the last year.

Based on ads from the era, it seems like nobody wore any color of watch strap other than tan and brown from the mid 30's to mid 50's.
Real men wear small watches.

Apparently, the 760/761 automatic line was called Thin-Thin. Worst name ever for a watch! I'm never going to call my 30 jewel 760 Lord Elgin the Thin-Thin  The ad is from 1961

Image

Here's another one from 1961 advertising a Lord Elgin with the 760 automatic. Prices started at $100 and the highest end case was 10K.
