Introduction and request for assistance identifying a piece

#1 Post by The Ragman » Thu Oct 04, 2018 12:38 pm

Hello friends and neighbors,
I am new the forum and, in a sense, to watch collecting. I have always enjoyed watches but over the past 9 months done so with more of a focus on automatic / manual and the history of makers and styles. With that I recently picked up a couple of pieces and am enjoying searching down the history. However, I’ve gotten myself stuck and am looking for a bit of help.

One piece I picked with is this Elgin Watch. I listed some pictures and what data I think I’ve found below. I believe it be a piece from 1961 during what I understand was the last decade of the company when it was still making pieces in the US but importing Swiss movements. The movement is stamped “Elgin 793” (alas the picture I took with the case open did not come out). Any help identifying the model or reference # of the piece along with any history would be appreciated. I assume this is an acrylic or plastic crystal but am also not sure what was typical of that period. Many thanks.

Movement stamped: Elgin 793
Inside case back stamped: R/ Elgin National Watch Company Swiss 10200

Grade Origin Known as Date Description Size Jewel
793 Swiss AS 1673 Apr-1961 Is a 5/0 size, 17-jewel, sweep second, automatic movement 5/0s 17

welcome aboard.

elgins from this period are hard to identify as the company was in turmoil and there is a lack of catalogs.

I found this advertisement from 1961 that looks like a match.
