Elgin Dante Black face Model 6811

#1 Post by liveinthefens » Wed Sep 19, 2018 9:30 am

Hello all,

Just been delivered to the UK and into my care, this Elgin Dante, which is running.
All stainless steel as you all know and mid 1950's by the information gleaned here.
I have polished one face with the cape cod cloth and it has come up reasonably well for less than a minutes polishing.
Yes it need a new crystal and maybe new hands, bit hard to tell through that crystal.
I noticed that some of the other examples have a red marker to the second hand. What are the correct hands for this model and black face?

I want to polish the case before I send it away for a service so my main question is. How do I remove the movement?
If it's a task beyond my skills I will just have to do the best job I can before a service.

Thanks for any assistance and comments good or bad.

I’ve seen them with both second hands but the ads look like straight silver hands to me.

To remove the movement simply remove the stem. There is a tiny screw on the movement....

If the hands aren’t too pitted, I’ve often been able polish them. But it seems like on this model the hands are often rusted.

Thanks for the info on the hands.

Guess I had that tiny screw thing coming :D
I will leave it to Greg he like tiny screws.
I will polish it up anyway and post some photos when it is returned.
