New Old Watch!

#1 Post by GeneJockey » Sun Apr 22, 2018 7:10 am

A couple years back I got interested in Elgin's pocket watches. Luckily, the urges were limited - just a couple areas, not the entirety of Elgin's 90 years of making pocket watches! Most recently, it's been the oldest Elgins - the keywound 18s ones. I'm pretty sure I've posted several of them. Mostly the movements are gilt, like most of the watches produced by the nascent American watch companies. But there was one that intrigued me, because it was nickel plated and damascened. They usually go for a bit more than the a no-name 11j keywound Elgin would, but I finally got one!

It's a Grade 87, from about 1881. Not rare, not even uncommon. But I like it. Runs pretty well, but needs servicing.

The dial and hands are in great shape, and it came in a Silverore case in great condition.

Very nice! Classic look, and as you say ... the nickel plates are special. They give the watchmaker a chance to add a few more finishing touches in the damaskeening.
