Lord Elgin Something of interest?

#1 Post by liveinthefens » Sun Oct 08, 2017 10:45 am

Something of interest?

This is for sale in the UK at present, I did not know Elgin produced Platinum watches.
But I bet Michael did.
It still has an hour to run and its £565.55
I wonder what its first buyer paid for it?

There are a few marks on the case but I expect they would polish out quite easily with some care and attention.

Out of my league :( But would be a nice watch to have in any collection if you have the funds.

Buyers description below.

Ebay number 232506107707

This is a very rare Lord Elgin platinum cased wrist watch, Elgin made very few men’s watches with platinum cases and they were very expensive items.
The case is 20mm wide and 37mm tip of lug to tip of lug. The case is very clean - this was clearly a well looked after watch.
The watch is in excellent condition, the case has few marks on it and the dial is pristine.
The very clean Elgin 670 movement runs and the watch keeps time, but I have no record of the service history.
Case signed by the maker Schwab Wuischpard, all in all a wonderful example of a top quality American made watch.
Fitted with a nos lizard strap.

That's a Model 4501 which first appeared around 1942 and was made into the early 1950s.

It was $225.00 when new.

Unfortunately, this one offered on eBay has the wrong dial. Should have black printed numerals at 12, 2, 4, 8, and 10 and rhodium plated solid gold markers at the other hour locations. Tough dial to find as it was unique to this model. There was one in a group of dials last year, but I missed it.

Elgin produced at least 3 models of men's wristwatches in platinum, with this model being the one seen most often. But it is fairly rare; I've only had 2 or 3 over the years.

I’d love to have one. I have a similar model in gold.
Finding the right dial with the proper markers would be one heck of a challenge.

Thought that would generate some interest. :D

Its just sold for £621 or $812.98.

$225 in 1942 equals $3,504.66 or £2677.05 in 2017, allowing for inflation.
This person has a bargain even with the wrong dial!
Thanks everyone as always for the information.

I’ll be honest I was very tempted but I just bought a bunch of other watches. I must regulate myself.
Or something like that. Lol
I hope I don’t regret not trying to buy this one.
