Elgin Celestial Model 7519 23j grade 718.

#1 Post by 441victor » Thu Aug 31, 2017 6:02 pm

Finally nailed down a nice example of the Horizon Look Celestial. I know I’m late to the game here as these are fairly common around the forum.

Image

Even in gold fill, these are easy to find in unworn condition although the Elgin ad might lead one to believe these were solid gold.

As long as no one has had the crystal off, it’s hard to destroy the paint on the bezel surrounding the inset dial. The black and grey color scheme is not as flashy as the Anthony or Everest. This grey strap came with it and I like the way it looks. The case has the advantage along with the Continental of having better designed lugs than the breakage prone Meridian and Panorama.

The 13/0 movements like this 718 don’t have serial numbers so dating these is a matter of tracking advertisement dates. The Celestial was around from the late 50’s to maybe 1960. Replacement movements and parts are easy to find so its possibly they can be kept running for generations more depending on the supply of watchmakers.

It's good to have another Horizon Look model in the collection.

Very nice. Just because there are a few on the forum doesn't mean it's common. Some of us are good hunters. ;)

Welcome to the club Joel!

its getting harder to find models at a reasonable price with the knowledge thats being built up and shared, not what it was 3-4 years ago...

yeh we all should have kept our mouths shut.

It looks like the dial is in great shape, and no flaking paint on the bezel. That makes this one of the better examples I've seen. Well done!

Now you just need to get yourself the right crystal! G-S number PA462-6. The Celestial, with its proper Wraparound crystal, is really spectacular! It's also not just a Horizon Look model, but also one of the Nite-Glo models. These had lume on the back of the hands, and an extra-long cannon pinion, so that the hands were visible at night as shadows against the backlighting from the dial.

BTW, the 718 was only around for about a year, from 1957, when it replaced the 713, till 1958 when the 730 was introduced. I don't think I've ever seen a Celestial with a 730, which makes me think they only made them for a year. Continentals, the ones with the black bezel with raised gold dots and a silver dial, I've seen with both 718 and 730, so they were probably made longer. Futuras, I've seen with 718, 730, and 784, so they seem to have lasted longer still.

Thanks for the dating info Doug. I was curious why the crystal didn't reach all the way to the edge of the case. I've seen that on several ebay examples and using the wrong replacement explains it. The hands on mine are actually lumed on the top of the very tips. I recall Grumpy restoring a model with this feature. It might have been Elgin's practice before Nite-Glo or they have been replaces also. Michael, you are reading my mind. I shake my head despairingly every time I do a search on ebay and see the completely unreasonable prices. Why do sellers think common, non-running, gold filled Elgins with brassing and leprous dials are worth hundreds of dollars. Or even $1200 and $1500 for over polished and over hyped pieces like a jeweler in San Francisco is trying to pawn off on buyers. I have only myself to blame for trying to educate people about Elgin only to make myself poorer as a result. Maybe as time passes reality will set in. Joel

Most likely wrong crystals as these are not readily identified now.

I don't have a GS crystal listed for this model and the crystal code from Elgin is only good for Elgin crystals.

I believe the hands are lumed on the tip and also under the hands on the back so they create a back lit affect.

Congrats, the Celestial is a great watch. Yup, get the right crystal ASAP! ;) As far as the lume goes.... When I first received the watch, I assumed it was a poor relume attempt as the Celestial is advertised as a Nite-glo watch. With that being said, I've seen at least 12 Celestials with the lume on the topside tips of the hands. For some reason, that is the way Elgin did this model.

I relumed my Celestial, and to be honest, the lume on the tips shows up much better at night compared to lume placed on the underside of the hands.

Now you just need a really cool center expansion band say with come black leather inserts to really make it pop :!:

A little searching at Tip Top Crystals got me squared away.
