The Elgin-Centura Line - The 100th Anniversary Line

#1 Post by diveboy » Wed Mar 22, 2017 3:38 am

The tease is over people.

Introducing the Elgin-Centura, This line was the 100th anniversary line from Elgin that never made it to market and never existed, you won't find this in any watch book or any history book on Elgin. This is an exciting new chapter being written here now, 53 years after these watches were designed

Information is scarce but this is only just beginning, you can read a little more here https://www.elgin.watch/enwco/watch-lin ... n-centura/

I know of one other forum member that owns an Elgin-Centura and I hope they will post on this thread to add to the story of the line that never was.

I do indeed own one. It was not easy to acquire.
I have been waiting for Michael- Diveboy to finish his research before sharing it.
Here is mine.

Nice. The round dial reminds me of a Universal Geneve three hander.

Beautiful Centuras, guys!

(Michael, a few questions about the watchband: Is the manufacturer identified by name and/or logo somewhere on it? Is it solid gold or, instead, gold-filled? Do you think this one is original to the watch?)

Give me a few days, this one's at the bank for obvious reasons.

The band is original to the watch, I got it out of the estate of of one of the regional sales reps for Elgin. The watch hasn't been worn before as far as I can tell and is in its factory state.

The dial on stryfox's watch has 'hand-painted prototype' all over it!

Michael, did a trademark search turn up anything on Centura? I can't remember whether I saw anything like that.

Finding a known, unmarketed prototype is awesome! Makes you wonder whether somewhere, somebody has the draft marketing materials that never saw daylight....

If we didn't find the 1962 annual report, nothing would be known about this line.

And it is a line not just a few prototypes, the case numbers I've sighted are all in the case parts book and I've been securing dials for some time now and there's enough different ones to make up at least 25 models now. Yes I have been quiet on this one while putting the pieces together.

Swiss manual, swiss auto, American manual, American electronic.

This is the anniversary line that never made it to market in 1964, not just one or two prototypes, these are the design groups models for the line.

Who needs Baselworld when you collect Elgins?

I promised last year this would be a great year for Elgin, wait for the next release...

Honestly I'm just happy I have one. I only knew about them from earlier conversations i had with Diveboy. I have been searching and the only other centura I have seen the dial clearly did not fit and was in a watch case that was too early.

Back when I got it I was surprised to see case numbers in it along with ink stamp marks.
My assumption was it was a prototype from the dial printing.
I honestly don't know if this is a prototype or was made up in a batch as salesman sample.
As far as I could tell I was the first person to open it up.
I'm excited to see if any more information surfaces or gets dug up.
