Worth repairing for my dad's 70th? takano chateau 21 Jewels

#1 Post by Mosborn » Fri Dec 22, 2017 5:37 pm

I am new to watches and hope someone here can help me learn a little more about a watch.
First a little history to understand why I'm looking to learn more. My father and I parted ways when I was 15 and we did not speak for 20 years. I kept with me all that time a few of his belongs. They simply reminded me of a better time. Fast forward to today, and we are now very close! His 70th birthday is around the corner and I just came across one of those items I kept all those years. It is obviously a watch and I'm hoping someone here can help me learn more about this timepiece. I want to know if it is worth fixing or restoring. Maybe that is the worst thing to do with a vintage watch...I honestly have no idea.

On the face is:
Takano Chateau
Superior 21 Jewels

On the back is:
Takano Precision
20 Microns
TGP

I could add a pic of the action but I have no idea how to open it in the first place. There is no obvious way inside.

The value of the watch is what is it worth to you?
Bring it to a watch shop and ask them what a service for it would cost. Maybe 100 -125?
than decide from there.

I have my dad's and grandfathers timepieces much like many here do likewise, so for all the repairs were worth the effort.

BTW, take that band off and fit it with a nice black leather one. :)

I'm not interested in financial gain - how I treat it and what I spend to restore depends a bit on it's value. I was quoted $250 and 4 weeks to get it restored.
I have a pic of the movement and will post in a bit. [img][

not much else I can add other than each time I wear my dad's watch I'm glad I took the time to get it fixed!

Here's some information about the Takano brand (which in my 38 years of collecting watches I'd never heard of) that I found with a quick Google search. http://www.thewatchsite.com/21-japanese ... leted.html

Does the watch run? $250 would be quite a bit for a simple service on a watch like that but if parts are needed it very well be a lost cause if the article I linked to is correct and they were making their own movements.

The biggest gamble here is parts. If any are needed it will be difficult. Service prices start around $100 if you shop around but find someone you are comfortable with. Add a crystal/ cleaning, polishing and the price would Go higher.
$250 is not ridiculous if it’s someone you have confidence in.
