Watch purchase

#1 Post by bbc0 » Wed Nov 15, 2017 9:17 pm

Hi, I recently purchased this lovely small/ladies pocket watch. The case is solid silver and beautifully decorated but I can't find any manufacturers information on the watch at all. I have looked on the movement and again, no mark. The face is porcelain I believe and also beautiful. Best of all the watch is in working condition although it does lose about 6 minutes over 24 hours
Any help in identifying it would be much appreciated.

Your watch obviously is Swiss. It's a bar style "Lepine" movement keywind with a cylinder escapement. These were made from the 1850s to about 1900 or so. The movements were manufactured by a variety of companies and sold "in the grey" which means they were basically a pile of unfinished parts. The watchmaker or retailer would then finish the movements, case them up and sell them. Quite frankly if it's a cylinder escapement and running at all you're ahead of the game. Parts for these were never really available since they were all hand finished by craftsmen of varying degrees of skill. The only spare parts were assortments of blank parts that the watchmaker was supposed to finish to match. I'd say your watch is from the 1880 to 1900 period although it's hard to be sure with these.

Thanks for the response.
Does it have any value apart from the scrap silver value?
When I purchased it I was told that it had been in a drawer for maybe 45 years. I have kept it running now since my original posting and the accuracy has improved a lot and now it's only a minute or two slow over 24 hrs!
