I am looking to add a black dial/black bezel Speedmaster to the rotation. I want a mid-sized case, NOT the original huge moon watch. (Sorry Omega purists! LOL) I posted this on the Omega Forums, but so far the responses are mostly "save your pennies and buy the real thing." Alas, I DO NOT want one of those big lunks of steel... a very wise man here once wrote "real men wear small watches", after all! ;) I was leaning toward the "Mark 40 Date Chrono" or perhaps the "Reduced" -- though it seems the Reduced is almost universally disliked by the purists, perhaps in part because of the current movement in them. Frankly, I prefer the older gilded movement in them for some reason. Another suggestion has been the (pre-Mark 40) 1996 Chrono Date and the FOIS First Omega in Space model. Does anyone here feel strongly about any of the mid-sized (38-40mm) Omega watches? If so, please help guide me.

Love my 38mm 3523.30 Speedy. This model also comes in black dial (3523.50).

Tom,

Thanks for the suggestions! I do like your example greatly. Is the black dial/black bezel example you posted the "Reduced" model? Was your watch type made with a black dial and black bezel? If it was, that might be the one I want. What movement is in yours?

The 3539.50 is a reduced (39mm). The 3523 models did not come with a black bezel. 3 dials in silver, black and blue (3523.80). I don't know for sure if any of their other black bezels would fit, but I don't see why they wouldn't given they seem to use the same case for many models. I don't remember which movement it has.

Here are a few models that I'm interested in. I have evolved away from the "Reduced" models to avoid the stacked movements. Any cautions with these?

Rick, I don't know enough about Omega to give advice. I bought mine purely on aesthetics and complications, like most newbs. :o The 2nd, 3rd & 5th look best to me, though.

Thanks Tom! The problem I am running in to is that there are so many nice models with black dials... but I guess the good thing is that there are a LOT of them available. if I miss one, another will come along. (BTW, these are not the exact ones i am deciding between, just examples of the models I have located.) This price on these 4 models varies quite a bit. I might need to sell a Consul to finance it. (And for me, that's not easy to do... LOL.)

We have a winner! Just waiting for seller to accept my offer as he as agreed. (Again, this is not the exact example... I found a NOS example with all the goodies.) I am just a sucker for the roulette/soccer timer-esque subs and (mostly) black dial/black bezel.

I have a FOIS, I prefer it on a bracelet (it's on a vintage JB Champion) rather than the rather cheap O.E.M strap. It's 39mm, but it wears large.

I recently joined the "Omega Speedmaster" club myself, just last week.

I am pretty much OVER Rolex these days, they just don't seem that special to me anymore.

I wore an 18k & SS Rolex Datejust for about 8 years but EVERYBODY has one.

They are so common in my area here in Houston that they call them a Texas Timex, they are really that common.

I wanted something different!

I shopped around for a few weeks and soon as I saw this one I simply HAD to own it!

Ref. 3513.50

Here in Texas I don't like to wear my WWI antique trench watches out of the house during the Summer months, it's way too hot down here and the bands get messed up quickly.

So, I bought this Speedy to fill my needs.

Absolutely LOVE this watch ! ! ! !

I highly recommend the Speedy. I have 2 1969s with the 861. Here's one I'm wearing today.

Did you consider the FOIS.

It's modelled on the earlier "straight lug" speedy and scrapes in under the 40mm size.

Edit

Doh, missed the post above. Sigh.
