Illinois Spotlight- Southampton and "Enamel" Southampton

#1 Post by GJH » Tue May 14, 2013 7:12 pm

Ok Gang... here is one that is very scarce in the wild...

This is the Illinois Southampton.

Engraved Bezel

If you don't have Fred's Book, "The Illinois Watch, the Life and Times of a Great
American Watch" PLEASE invest in this!

Plain Bezel

These pop up in the wild every once in a while, but
The problem is, they tend to have Elgin movements and dials on them.

As Fred notes, This dial appears in the 1930 and 1936 materials Catalogues
but not on the List of Factory-cased Watches, there for falling into the generic Period.

The caseback markers are the key to this watch and it is ALL in the markings:
"I" marked is for Illinois
"E" Elgin
"E/I" Elgin/Illinois

Mine happen to have the "E-I"
(Fahys)

FJF Notes:
Difficult to find in any combo especially YGF/GGF

Rarity: 3/6 to 6/6
Case Makers: Fahys, IWCC, Others.
Lug Size: 16mm
Movement Size 6/0
Case#: none
Movements: 605/15J 607/17

As Fred points out, This Dial is VERY elusive.
BELIEVE me... He is right!

There is a note in Fred's book that there is one example of this watch in private hands
with a remarkable black inlaid enamel around the bezel:

Here is another one:
(2 known now)

GJH Notes:

One of those "Must Have Illinois"
The Dial is the biggest pain in the butt to find!
Check the caseback markings BEFORE buying.

Excellent. Thank you. I have added these to the Illinois Photo Thread and linked the Southampton entry back to this thread.
