My inflation calculator tells me that the 66 dollar Illinois watch in 1931 would cost over 980 in 2012. Can this be possible?

Are the vintage catalogues expensive to buy?

Yes.

The more collectible the items in the catalog are, the more expensive the catalog. I have several catalogs that cost over $100. Serious collectors appreciate the original information that can be found in these documents.

Most of the individual ads you see online are originals, cut from period magazines. There are also compilations of ads which are cut and pasted (digitally) and assembled into books. Personally, I prefer working with the originals.

Thanks so much for these images, Adam!

It helps me to see the star/burst/sun on the Consul illustration — not very much contrast intended on that dial, I see.

Speaking of vintage Illinois advertisements: Rumor has it that Fred Friedberg's forthcoming book is going to have an unbelievable number of those! What a fabulous new resource for collectors this HUGE book is going to be -- a multivolume work, I've heard!

(But hang on to Fred's first book if you have one -- and if you don't, try to acquire a copy while you still can. I understand that the new book is by no means just an updated and expanded edition of the first one, and that there's lots of valuable material in the first book that will continue to be valuable after the second one comes out.)

Here's a better photo. It's marked Hadley.

FWIW, Kreisler made the same style of band too. Here's one on a Gruen I used to own.

Interesting -- must have been a particularly popular style! (Wonder which company did it first. . .)

BTW, rumor has it that Fred's new book is going to have a chapter that includes not only detailed coverage of cases and casemakers but also a big section on manufacturers of watchbands -- with LOTS of advertisements for them!

For the most part my pet brand Gruen is sorely lacking in records, but there is a comprehensive scrap book documenting nearly all of the bands/straps/bracelets that they used including stock numbers and suppliers.
