1917 WWI Burlington "Aviator" Trench Watch

#1 Post by Literustyfan » Thu Oct 18, 2018 8:15 am

I picked this one up a couple of weeks ago.

Just finished putting it back together a few days ago.

1917 WWI Burlington "Aviator" Trench Watch.

Nice 17 jewel movement, it was seized up, took it apart and gave it a good cleaning.

Running very well for the past several days, great timing, high amplitude and low beat error.

The gold filled case that was made by the Illinois Watch Case Company is in great condition with almost no wear spots.

In 1917 the IWCCo named this case the "Admiral Benson", when private labeled for Burlington they named it the "Aviator".

Dial and hands look to be original to the piece and ALL of the original lume is still intact.

Original factory crown and original glass crystal to boot!

I was going through my bins and I had stashed away one of the tapered leather straps that was factory equipment from the IWCCo.

The strap is rather brittle so it can't be worn, sort of a bummer but you don't see many of these that still have a (tapered at the lugs) factory strap on them.

Nice! It's interesting how the strap is shown backwards in the advertisement.

Good get Stan. I saw that auction and knew it was going to blow past my budget. I'm glad someone got it who knew what it was and would do it justice. I always put the buckle end on the 6 o'clock lugs of my watches. It makes it easier for my clumsy fingers to get them strapped on my wrist without dropping them. It drives one of my watch friends so crazy he won't try on any of my watches. I'll have to show him this ad. Joel

Yeah, this not an exception to the rule, many straps were attached with the buckle end at the 6 o'clock position.

I noticed shortly after I posted this that I put the strap on opposite of the advert.

I changed the strap to how it is configured in the advert last night.

Several Elgin Trench Watch and Waltham Trench Watch adverts show the buckle at the 6 'o'clock position too.

This one was on a client's "wish list" so it did not stick around for very long.

It went into what is probably the great collection of WWI American trench watches in the world so it is in very good hands.

He sure does. Every time I see one of these beauties he posts, I think I need a trench watch.
