Where to find a stem sleeve for an 0 size Illinois?

#1 Post by Gabe » Fri Aug 03, 2018 10:46 am

I'm writing again for your kind advice:

My watch guy says I need to find a stem sleeve for an 0 size Illinois.

The stem will not stay in.

This is the watch in question:

This page https://pocketwatchdatabase.com/search/ ... is/4795153 identifies it as a Grade 24 3/0s Model 3.

I called Otto Frei and Esslinger and neither carries these materials.

Now here's the question: can I use a Grade 24 3/0s Model 4 as a donor movement for the stem sleeve?

A good watchmaker should have a sleeve for that.

This is an amazing Enamel Atlantic... very hard to find.
Get that running!!!

I think for your example, the sleeve is not a part of the movement but of the case. This could be a "top-hat" style or one of the threaded type. These are the negative set types and the stem has a taper that holds it into the sleeve and engaged with the movement. Do you have the stem?

I do have the stem for this one but it won't stay in.

I sent it off to Dave Coatsworth to see if he can somehow recite some magical desert incantation that gets it to set properly. ;)

I seem to have a few Illinois with a similar problem (the stem doesn't engage properly for the purpose of setting or winding).

My watch guy tightened a screw on a Futura today and fixed an issue with a loose stem.
