Cool Ephemera

#1 Post by GJH » Wed Jul 18, 2018 7:39 am

One of my favorite chapters in Fred's new book set is chapter 5.

In this book, there is a TON of Ephemera.
Ephemera is the advertising and other marketing and promotional stuff
from the Illinois Watch company. It is very difficult to come by (in most cases)
because not a lot of it was saved, and much of it was thrown away.

If you have examples, please show them off here.

A wooden Advertisement sign.

That sign is great! I would love that hanging above my bench.

Here is an undated folded leaflet for the Holidays. Maybe someone can suggest what year it is from based on the wristwatches and prices. (I suspect it is from around 1927-28)

Beautiful advertising leaflet, Jerry! I believe it's likely from the autumn of 1927 -- for the Christmas trade that year. (Many of the watches advertised in it, and the copywriting for them, correspond to what Illinois ran in its pages for 1928 jobbers' catalogs, which would have been being assembled in late 1927.)

Thanks! That fits well with the pocket watches shown as well. The "Illini" in the Dictator case is pretty late.

I'm fond of those wooden sign boards (we have one, too).

Our favorite recent acquisition is a watch key with an appropriate motto:

Hard to beat that sentiment!

It's also interesting to see that Illinois was being sold overseas enough to justify a special key.

Cool Leaflet and super neat key!!!

Here are a few more items...

A display case. I can't believe the seller got it to me undamaged, but he did.

Mirror at back of case to see the watches better:

And here is another one fashioned from an advertising frame.

Awesome Factory Frame!!!

Here is a VERY rare one...

The 30 Year Club pin.

This is the only known surviving example.
It has a real diamond in the center.

Here is a real window from the factory. It was above a door in the engraving department (duh)
There is an Apple under it for size comparison.
