What do I have here?

#1 Post by JerseyMo » Wed Nov 15, 2017 11:47 am

Just back from my friends watch shop and he handed me this Illinois to sell.

What can you tell me about it and PM if interested in purchasing.

Yes, the case is rough and worn! Movements runs a bit and stops, so looks like a clean and such should get it running well again.
the spots are on the glass and not the dial.

That is probably one of the most worn new yorker/5th Avenue/Manhattans that I've seen... But with a lovely dial!

You must need a loupe to see it. It looks a-okay to me! ;)

You could say that is VERY loved.

Actually, it is a New Yorker variation called a Yorktown.

I too have never seen that amount of casewear on one of these EVER.

The dial and movement have a little value, but the case is basically beyond repair.

There are Lazer guys who could fix it, but these cases can be found.

Hi Greg,

Why is this aYorktown? Is it because of the subs at 6???

Are they more sought after than a standard new yorker etc?

Would Yorktown have come with a strap or a bracelet?

Not one I've heard of, v interesting

Andy:)

It literally is a New Yorker with this specific dial.

In Fred's first book he states:
"This is another example of a different dial warranting a different model name."

This case was a big seller for Illinois, so they must have tried to mix it up for
maximum value.

New Yorker
New Yorker Enamel
Manhattan
Yorktown
Firth Avenue

All these share the same Case #162

This watch will have a new life soon and I will keep you all up to date on the progress..

SPEAKING OF NEW YORKERS...

I saw this one on ebay and was wondering if I missed anything... why is this still here
and no one has grabbed it? I usually do.
I can't have them all folks, this looks like a steal... you rarely see them in this condition with
little to no wear.

The seller even has a make an offer... hello?

I have no relation to the seller and have no skin in the game, just can't believe no one grabbed this fast.

I think I own 3 variations of the New Yorker, all bought in times of weakness OR to get the 21 jewel movements they contained. And I know that I have never EVER worn any of them. To me it's a model that is just too small to wear, and I imagine I'm not alone. (Full disclosure, I likely outweigh Greg by 75 pounds... and my wife of 26 years would say it's closer to 100. LOL) Plus, I happen to prefer New Yorker's with the subs at 9... because, visually, it makes more sense for the wide shape of this case, and it also makes the sub-second square larger. So, for me, at the current price of this seemingly nice example it's still not a value... as I like to wear all of my watches. For those who want every model, it's likely a fair/nice price.

HA!
Yes, this would be quite small on your wrist compared to mine for sure!
When I see something in great shape with a "Make me an Offer" like this, I think
"Seller would probably take" number. Not sure, But I would guess, $275-325 gets it.
Almost all of these have case wear on the corners of the bezel and this one is clean and has the
enamel on the sides and most likely a decent service, which also helps.
Rick is the king of the 21J movement and if this had one of those, it would have been bought
by one of us in 2 seconds. Back to my "Making Illinois More Valuable" thread!

and my problem is, I have been the guy that Rick describes as:
"For those who want every model, it's likely a fair/nice price" Guy. :D

Greg,

Actually, I would describe you as the guy who wants 3-5 of every model/variation. ;)
