AVOID like the Plague! NOT a REAL Depollier Product

#1 Post by Literustyfan » Mon Dec 24, 2018 6:25 am

I spotted one to AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE on ebay this morning. The seller claims that the sterling silver case was made by "DEPOLLIER". This is simply NOT true. The bezel and case back were made by Depollier. BUT, the case center was in fact NOT made by Depollier. Somebody simply put a Depollier bezel and case back onto a case center that was made by Illinois Watch Case Company. The crown is a dead giveaway to this fact. Take a VERY close look at the first picture. Note that the case center and bezel don't quite line up properly. There is about a .5mm - .75mm gap between the two case parts. Depollier NEVER made lugs for his trench watches like the ones seen in the pics. Those are 10mm lugs. Depollier lugs were usually 14mm in diameter for non-waterproof cases. Depollier NEVER made an OFFSET CROWN trench watch configuration. He did in fact make trench watches with the crown at the 12 o'clock position. This watch was put together with spare parts that would fit onto this case center, period. Plus, the back side of the case center would have tiny roman numerals that match the case back serial number stamped onto it if it was in fact made by Depollier. This case center is missing that very unique identifying mark. So, avoid this one like the Plague! This watch is NOT a genuine Depollier made product! The purple colored text information in the listing was written by me several years ago, looks like he found it on one of the watch forums and did a copy and paste onto his listing. I have NO association with this seller! I'm not accusing the seller of intentionally misrepresenting the watch. He probably does not realize that this watch was slapped together with spare parts laying around in somebody's shop.

Just don't want to see any of my friends get ripped off!

Hi, Thank you for your expert opinion. I am working to update the listing, but ebay has a known issue right now. As soon as they get it fixed, I will have it updated.
Thanks
Tony Mayfield ( Owner of said listing )
PS It would have been much nicer to have heard from you directly instead of hearing from other people. I could possibly have gotten the listing updated much quicker

Yes, could have been handled better, especially on Christmas Eve...

I'd like to vouch for Tony — have purchased from him frequently and he is an upstanding seller.

What possible difference could it make what day it is when somebody IS IN FACT going to get ripped off?

It's been 5 DAYS since I pointed out that this watch is a complete and utter fraud and the seller has NOT done the honorable thing and REMOVED the listing from ebay.

Simply "updating" the listing will NOT be good enough, chances are that people will NOT go back and reread the entire listing description again before they up their bids.

You guys can "vouch" for the seller all you want but the bottom line is that this is a slapped together trench watch that was NEVER made by Depollier!

The seller is now well aware of this FACT and no action has been taken.

And if by chance this listing is "updated" I request that the information I wrote about Depollier is removed!

I do not want any of the painstaking research I did on the brand (that took years to compile) giving credence to this FRANKEN of a watch that was NEVER made by Depollier.

Many thanks for your advise. Although I don't spend much money, I try to buy some models. Like a Illinois Spanish collector is complicate to know these questions. In these days I have learn a lot about depollier models.

Thanks again.

Stan,
Thanks for the information on this watch.

This is not my watch and I have no bids on it.
With this said, I don’t see a lot changed and now that the correct information is out there, a listing should normally be updated.

I am sure Tony will do this, knowing there are discrepancies in the listing.

Just my 2 cents.

I've seen some low down dirty things in my time in the antique watch world but this one takes the cake!

The listing was never changed.

The listing was never removed, which is what should have happen immediately.

He fully knew that this watch was a fraud but he sold it grossly misrepresented as a genuine Depollier product.

He used what I researched and wrote about the Depollier brand to give credence to a FAKE Depollier watch that NEVER existed!

I hope your reputation was worth the $316.00 you sold it for!
