Watch Worn Over Shirt Cuff...?

#1 Post by tnwareagle89 » Wed Dec 27, 2017 9:04 am

Watched an interesting HBO documentary earlier this week about Giovanni Agnelli - former Fiat Chairman / Principal Owner
He wore his watch over his shirt cuff - anybody else do this? Some of his contemporaries copied that style, one of the people interviewed still wore his watch that way
Couldn't get a good screen shot of what type of watch Agnelli wore, other than it was gold toned (probably solid gold)
If you're into the history of cars, it's a good program

That is different!

He must have had the long bands or bracelets? We could become trendsetters! I have a pair of Red Wing 875 boots on and have my cuffs rolled up on the bottom.

Two things I never would have got caught dead doing in 1973; wearing rolled up jeans or Red Wing work boots!

I watched that documentary last week.

I really enjoyed it.

I found the watch over the cuff to be a bit odd, but to each his own, he wore it that way with confidence.

A visual aid for those who haven't watched the documentary in question:

Looks like he is wearing a diver. If so maybe he is mimicking wearing a wet suit? :D

Hum...
Just trying to find the logic in this...

Pros:
Easy to read the time (like a diver, yes)
Won't pull hair on arms
No oils from skin on watch, over time
"maybe" less wear from friction? (but maybe more)

Cons:
Look like an idiot
Ruin shirts, wrinkle shirts, catch band on shirts
Eaiser to scratch watch by something hitting it (cuff not covering)
Sun on dial over time, fading dial

Any other thoughts?

Agree entirely Greg.

Also easier for professional pickpockets/thieves.

However, from the look of him, it's quite possible that he would have arranged a horse's head to appear in your bed if you'd criticised his style. :)

I found this to be quite interesting and puzzling as to why one would wear a watch this way.
A little searching on the net gives some indication that this method is realted to yatch racing and early motor cycle racing.
Has to do with being able to see the timepiece without having to lift your sleeve.

Now I guess the next question is why do some wear a watch against the underside of the wrist? Maybe the same thought that it is easier to turn your wrist to see the time?
