When I gig with my band, I always wear my watch on the underside of my wrist. A little searching on the net gives some indication that this method is realted to yatch racing and early motor cycle racing.
Has to do with being able to see the timepiece without having to lift your sleeve.

Now I guess the next question is why do some wear a watch against the underside of the wrist? Maybe the same thought that it is easier to turn your wrist to see the time?
