use of the term "hacking"

#1 Post by JerseyMo » Tue Dec 19, 2017 5:22 pm

A hack watch is a watch that offers a mechanism for setting the watch to a specific time, stopping the watch, then restarting the watch the instant the time setting ...

Typically the way in which the hack occurs is that a lever stops the balance from beating when you pull the crown. But, is it fair to say that a quartz watch or an early electric watch hacks?
For both of these there is no lever that stops the balance, rather the hack is due to opening the electric circuit.

What do you think?

I think that if you can stop the seconds hand on demand then the watch qualifies as "hacking".
