Is Discussing Fakes Condoning It?

Moving on from "The Perils of Wearing Counterfeit Watches":

I wrote the following "Is Discussing Fakes Condoning It?"
Is Discussing Fakes Condoning it?

Not unless one is advocating their purchase, IMO.

I think SHOWING FAKES is fine (to learn how to spot them)
Asking about the authenticity of a watch is fine
Showing off one's fake... NOT fine IMO

Within the last year a Chinese company started reproducing Depolliers.

A few folks bought them and the profits from the investment were
not to be had, because folks weren't buying the whole thing and word
spread quickly. They stopped selling them.

If we have to fear that every watch we buy "may" be fake, it is a huge
issue and really hurts the market as we all know it.

I always use the analogy...
Imagine showing up in a respected Rolex forum and trying to show off your fake.

I fully agree against buying, wearing or repairing fakes.
I buy for one reason only, to let participants of my course tell the difference from genuine.

I am also against "proofing" with details watches on forums - I am happy to state my opinion "authentic or fake" but not explain all the reasons therefore helping the faker or 'EBay" seller "dupe" people

Thanks your thoughts

Except Rolex is an extant company with intellectual property rights. I've got no problem with Depolliers, Panerai 3646 blank dial replicas, etc., as long as they aren't being represented as genuine. And I understand that the Depollier guy may well have crossed that line with some of his other products, though I don't have any firsthand knowledge. But if there's no fraud or violation of intellectual property rights, then all's fair game in my view.

People are not of one mind on these things. And in many fields, vintage cars, guitars, etc., yes, you would show up on a hardcore forum to show off your well done replica.

Its not just ROLEX that have trademarks and patents.
"Panerai" is the Marque Depose or registered trademark of Officina Panerai - selling anything stamped with that name is 100% illegal. Same for OMEGA, Breitling, Prada, or Louie Vuitton.
Its illegal to sell counterfeit goods.

Is Discussing Fakes Condoning It? Interesting question but, subjective to opinion. For me the answer is no. The purpose is to educate rather than promote.

I don't have a problem discussing fakes if it's a conversation about why they are fake. If it's about how to make a better fake to fool people I see it as a problem.
I would pick the real timex over the fake Rolex every time.
To me people who buy fakes are more concerned about what other people think than about what they have.
I like the submariner, sure it's an iconic watch and I would like having one in my collection. However that money buys lots of vintage American watches I like.
I bought a steinhart, and own some seiko dive watches that have a submariner look. Nothing fake about them. Of course we know where the style comes from but that does not make a fake.

I work for a music company so am well aware of the impact of piracy and how so many I knew lost their positions because of it.
