Re: Cost of a watch service - Back in the day

It seems that in the days when everybody wore a mechanical watch, there was a good living to be made knocking out routine services at a low price through volume. Actually the conversation was that even back in the day making a living off of just routine service was not always enough to maintain a b...

Re: Cost of a watch service - Back in the day

I decided a while back to teach myself how to do a COA, as servicing fir me in the UK woukd be prohibitive. I have cocked up several Hamilton 980 movements in the process, but am nearly there now, and can hopefully resurrect most of my mistakes. can't learn if you don't make mistakes. at least that...

Re: Cost of a watch service - Back in the day

Let's say some of these guys are pushing 90, so they'd have started out around 1950. Adjusted for inflation, that's around $52. Let's say the guy who said $2.50 is pushing 100 and go back to 1940, then it would be $44. That must have been nice to have a watchmaker on every other corner charging suc...

Hey Mo that is an interesting watch!
Yes, it has what looks like a Seiko auto movement inside. The stainless steel construction is very good too.
Should last for years to come.

Cost of a watch service - Back in the day

While chatting with my watch maker friend today, he mentioned having gone to a local meeting of watch makers. Begin he is 70 now he is among the youngest! One topic of discussion was what a watch service cost back in the day. Would you believe $5.00 and that would include mainspring, stem and or cro...

Re: WRUW June 19, 2017 thru June 24, 2017

This one came in for repair due to poor time keeping. I spotted the rotor was not snipping. The issue was no more than some plastic from the movement space rubbing up against the rotor.
Cool watch....maybe I'll get one in 40 years when it is more "vintage".

Maybe he meant "professional" in the literal sense. Like he was expecting that being from 1971, it would have bell bottom jeans for a strap and a pimp hat for a crown.
No, I'd say that was not the intent of the use "professional".

Re: New Generation of Vintage Collectors

Very cool Morris but let's see how it hold up to discovering girls.......... Well to quote him "I had to wait awhile but it was totally worth it". Sorry, are you talking about watches again, or not??? :) hmm...good point.... each will present challenges! I can advise him on the watch part but...
