Re: Exploding Hastings, opinions??

The 1's (1, 10, 11, 12) are also different. But, the illustration from the advertisements is not a photograph, but merely a drawing. It kind of makes no sense that this dial would have serifs on every number and also on the Hamilton font but not on the number 1, does it? Who knows how correct this i...

Re: Exploding Hastings, opinions??

We know that Hamilton contracted-out quite a few dials to Stern, Flukinger, plus I think a few casemakers, and likely others too. I also have a feeling that some plates might have made and re-made as to cause dials to appear slightly different over time -- there are too many slight Tonneau dial vari...

Re: Exploding Hastings, opinions??

I enlarged it on purpose to show it at its worst. Frankly, the sloppy luminous is not noticeable in your hand with a naked eye. (And when I blow-up an original printed, not engraved, Oval dial it looks pretty much the same.) I think it might be more of a crusty luminous/radium burn than sloppiness. ...

Re: Buy a Seiko or invest in a Hamilton?

I echo what Bryan said. I collect vintage Hamilton and Illinois, and more recently Pierce, Seiko, and a few others. There are a lot of great options in either Hamilton or Seiko. But, if I had to suggest one vintage watch to a college student (my son is also a college student also, btw), it would be ...

Re: International Dial

Interestingly, although I started this thread a few years ago, I recently received 3 Elgin dials back from ID, and they are each about as perfect as they can be. My gut feeling is that with the economy going pretty well the last few years, they probably are having a hard time keeping good employees....

Re: Oxford

So cool Rick, you need to work on depth of field so we can see watch and tower in focus.....LOL Awesome and congrats, I have never seen that ribbon with a Packard watch. LOL, I took these photos with my cell phone on the way home from picking it up at the post office. I'm not sure if I can adjust D...

Re: Oxford

I tried... missed it by seconds! I also tried for the Packard Langley and missed it by even less! Oh well. I got the Langley. I picked it up at the post office and drove immediately to the Packard Proving Grounds. I have been out of town the last few days, but I will clean it up and repost soon.
