Re: Illinois - early ww

This movement would originally have been in a hunter-style pocket watch case. At some later date someone, probably a jeweler, transferred it to a generic wristwatch case as pocket watches fell out of style. Although only the movement is by Illinois, such "updated" watches were popular in the late 19...

My watch for church today was an Illinois "Guardian":

WRUW 7/1 through 7/7/2018?

To start out the month, I wore a Hamilton Linwood to church this morning:

The Linwood hadn't been out in a long time; how could I have failed to wear such a distinctive design?

Re: June Incoming 2018

I think that the Hamilton-Illinois catalog drawings do not always match the actual bracelets that showed up on the watches. The catalog image you show comes from p. 32 of the 1955 Hamilton catalog. If you look across to p. 33, you will see the Debonaire Model E with the links facing the way they are...

Re: A Hamilton by any other name...Vantage!

You never know where a Vantage will turn up. I recently bought a Hamilton electric that should have had a 505 movement in it. But it had a 555E instead. I guess some earlier collector had substituted when he couldn't fix the 505. It's running, so I may just leave it where I found it. I have several ...

Re: Some super cool Hammy's

The crystal on jump-hour watches of this era (Bulova, among others, actually had them for sale) is typically a thin sheet of flat glass under the flat bezel.

Re: Some super cool Hammy's

I need to correct myself about the colors of the watch on p. 333 of the book. On closer examination of the source image, I see that the bezel is, like the one Nookster posted, white, and the dial plate is yellow. But are white trim arches as overlays on the yellow, and it was the color of these that...

Jump-hour Illinois watch

Unless you have bought Fred's new book and have been diving deeply into it, you might not be aware that Illinois was investigating production of a jump-hour watch. But on p. 332 he shows a working prototype that turned up just as the book was about to go to press. At that time it was the only exampl...

Re: Some super cool Hammy's

Super cool for sure! That jump-hour Illinois looks like an earlier draft of the watch Fred shows on p. 332 of the new book. The one in the book is a complete watch, and the colors of the metal are reversed from this one: yellow gold outer bezel with sterling silver plate in the dial opening. Did the...
