Grumpy, that's a neat Everest. I wasn't familiar with that model, but I like the two-tone dial.

Re: Vintage 1911 Hamilton Watch Case Help

This is a very high-grade railroad watch. The movement is a 950, Hamilton's best grade among the 16-size models that were in long-term production. This one appears to have gold train gears, which is a sign of extra care in production. (Some 950s just had gold center wheels.) The serial number, 75027...

Re: WRUW 7/22 through 7/28/2018?

Tuesday's watch is an Elgin 6720: http://mrtoad.net/Media/201807WRUW/Elgin_6720.jpg Not bad for a $15 watch, running well and complete with bracelet! (Does anyone know whether this model has a name?) Grumpy, I like that bumper! I'm fascinated by automatics in square cases, since the mechanism seems ...

Re: Crown pops out question?

The movement you're showing is 3/0 size. The problem you describe is typical of wristwatches in 3/0 size (not just Illinois). You're probably used to smaller wristwatch movements in which there is a setting lever that engages a groove on the stem. The little bump on the lever holds the stem in place...

Re: Cool Ephemera

I'm fond of those wooden sign boards (we have one, too). Our favorite recent acquisition is a watch key with an appropriate motto: http://mrtoad.net/Media/201807WRUW/Illinois-watch-key-f.jpg http://mrtoad.net/Media/201807WRUW/Illinois-watch-key-b.jpg Hard to beat that sentiment! It's also interestin...

Re: Illinois - early ww

This movement would originally have been in a hunter-style pocket watch case. At some later date someone, probably a jeweler, transferred it to a generic wristwatch case as pocket watches fell out of style. Although only the movement is by Illinois, such "updated" watches were popular in the late 19...

WRUW 7/1 through 7/7/2018?

To start out the month, I wore a Hamilton Linwood to church this morning:

The Linwood hadn't been out in a long time; how could I have failed to wear such a distinctive design?
