Mark, thanks for the comments on the "Ritz". It's one of my favorite Illinois designs. I wonder what they might have gone on to produce if Hamilton hadn't swallowed them. And, yes, the numerals are known as "Egyptian". There are some examples of the "Ritz" with plain numerals, and they're not nearly...

What you have here is an example of a cushion-form watch from the generic period of wristwatch making. In the pocket-watch trade, jewelers or jobbers bought movements and dials separately from cases and then assembled them together for the customers. One was a "Dixon", from 1936, which was about the time he finished his first graduate degree and started his career in college teaching.
