Re: Worst Franken Ever?

This thread raises some interesting questions and I wonder what the more experienced collectors (I mean, more than I) would say to these. Seems obvious that a mismatch between the dial and the case would be a franken, such as the watch that started this thread. But what about a movement that is not ...

Re: Hacking Movements

The Vancott dial looks identical to Secometer. Different case design.

Re: Hacking Movements

Hamilton introduced a version of its 987A movement, designated 987S, in 1940. Called Sentinel, it had a sweep second hand and hacking feature. With a slightly different dial it was produced for a little while after the war, called Secometer. These were 10k gold-filled. I'm not aware of any 1930's so...

Hamilton rose gold No. 2 case ?

I’ve just acquired a 10k rose (maybe) gold-filled Hamilton No. 2 case, no movement. It arrived this evening and is in very nice condition. I’ll have to look at it again in daylight tomorrow, but I’m in some doubt whether it is rose gold. For sure the bow is yellow gold and the contrast is quite obvi...

Re: Packard inscriptions

I don't "have" this watch, as I said it is on eBay right now. I posed this question because this inscription is different from others I have seen and I was unsure about bidding on it. I already have Custer and Cameron in my collection but these Packard inscriptions,Cadillac too, interest me as those...

Packard inscriptions

I'm guessing someone here can explain the difference (other than the obvious) between these two inscriptions? (The Custer is on eBay right now.) Was Earle Anthony maybe a Packard dealer? I think I read here that all Packard inscriptions were done in the factory?

Re: What you wish you knew

Gold-filled case repair can be done but only in limited circumstances. I’ve had three gold-filled cases repaired by laser welding, by a jeweler Dan recommended in his blog. But these were areas where the brassing had an abrupt edge the jeweler could work to then grind smooth. The more typical brassi...

fitting crystal to out-of-round bezel

I'm working on a Chatelaine, c. 1957, whose bezel is out of round by about 0.15 to 0.20 mm. The center part of the case measures perfectly round to 0.00 mm. This might explain why the bezel was so hard to get off (?). I'm trying to fit a new glass crystal. (The old crystal was some kind of plastic t...

Re: Military Hamilton collection

The pocket watch on the left is interesting, has a sweep seconds hand and it appears two subseconds dials, one for 60 seconds and one for 30? What was the purpose of those?
